The challenge of overconsumption and waste is acute in modern societies. In the Netherlands alone, billions of euros worth of unused items sit in homes, while production of new goods continues to strain resources and the environment. Many households are overwhelmed by clutter, and the environmental impact of unused goods surpasses that of other well-known issues such as flying or eating meat.

SwapShare® is a circular economy initiative that responds to this problem by offering a practical, community-driven solution: pop-up swap events. At these events, people bring items they no longer need and exchange them for things they want or need, creating a direct, local loop of reuse. This approach not only prevents waste and reduces the demand for new products, but also fosters social connections and community resilience.

SwapShare® partners with local governments, libraries, and businesses to host events in neighbourhoods and workplaces. The model is intentionally simple, accessible, and replicable. It is designed to normalise sharing and swapping, making it as easy and attractive as buying new. The results are significant: over 150,000kg of goods have been swapped, 2,000+ community members connected, and 80% of participants swapped for the first time.

Challenges include overcoming the ingrained habit of buying new, logistical organisation of events, ensuring quality and safety of items, and scaling the model nationally without losing its local, community-driven character.

The solution lies in the strength of partnerships, clear communication of environmental and social benefits, and the creation of joyful, well-organised events that make swapping a positive experience. SwapShare® shows that circularity is not just about materials, but about people and relationships.
