DESCRIPTION
Set up recycling services for City of Calgary and Edmonton at Landfill sites and Eco-Stations respectively. This program will provide a net economic benefit and be a key component in helping them achieve their targets of 90% waste, GHG and carbon footprint reduction.
Currently Calgary and Edmonton have residential styrofoam put through their black-bin program. This high volume/low weight material causes the trucks to max out on volume capacity- not weight. By removing this material from the black bin program they will see a net reduction in number of trucks picking up black bins (since each truck will be able to pick up 8% more bins. This equals an overall net cost savings to black bin program- even when paying for our service.
Each Landfill station (Calgary) and Eco-Station (Edmonton) will be offered scheduled service to recycle styrofoam that residents can conveniently drop off when they are dropping off other materials that can’t go in the black bin program including batteries, paint, fluorescent bulbs, aerosol cans, etc. Since people are already dropping off other HHW items, styrofoam is just another thing residents drop off when they need to go to the Eco-Station anyway. Easy, convenient for residents and a net cost savings for city.
