DESCRIPTION
Matsentralen Oslo is Norway’s first food redistribution centre, established in 2013. Located strategically in Ensjø, it has played a pivotal role in combating food waste and supporting vulnerable communities in Oslo and Viken. The initiative has successfully redistributed nearly 13,000 tonnes of food, equivalent to 26 million meals, to various charitable organisations.
Problem
The primary problem Matsentralen Oslo aims to solve is food waste. In Norway, significant amounts of food are discarded despite being fit for consumption. This waste contributes to environmental degradation and missed opportunities to support those in need.
Challenges
Matsentralen Oslo faces logistical challenges in collecting, storing, and distributing large quantities of food. Ensuring food safety and quality during redistribution is crucial. Additionally, raising awareness about food waste and mobilising community support are ongoing challenges.
Solution/Idea
Matsentralen Oslo addresses these challenges by partnering with food suppliers and donors to collect surplus food. The food is stored in a 2,000 m² facility designed for efficient and safe operations. The centre collaborates with organisations like Kirkens Bymisjon, distributing food to those in need and raising awareness about food waste and poverty through projects like Matsentralen Kjøkken.
